Why Church ?

WHY CHURCH?

INTRODUCTION

Some Christians believe that being involved with a local church is not important. They think that living out their faith with God alone, is enough!

This is a lie and deception from the devil.

Some people say that the church is the combination of believers, not just a Sunday service. Therefore they are part of the church even if they live out their faith on their own.

While the bible does describe the wider church as the total collection of all believers, every New Testament letter is written to “the church” in a certain town. this only describes the people who come together regular in corporate worship.

Being involved in a local church is essential for many reasons.

  1. Because the Holy Spirit set up the first church according to God’s plan.

    1. Acts 2:41-47 (NIV) Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. [42] They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. [43] Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. [44] All the believers were together and had everything in common. [45] Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. [46] Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, [47] praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  2. Because Jesus does not change his ways.

    1. Hebrews 13:8-9 (NIV) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. [9] Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.

  3. Because we are commanded to meet together

    1. Hebrews 10:25 (NIV) Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

  4. Because being outside the church is seen as punishment

    1. 1 Corinthians 5:1-2,5 (NIV) It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife. [2] And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? [5] hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

  5. Because being in the church is protection against satan.

    1. 1 Corinthians 5:4-5 (NIV) When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, [5] hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

  6. Because the church is Jesus’ body on earth

    1. 1 Corinthians 12:27 (NIV) Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

  7. Because Jesus is the head of the church

    1. Colossians 1:18 (NIV) And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

  8. Because the Gifts of the Spirit operate in the church

    1. 1 Corinthians 14:12 (NIV) So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

  9. Because the bible tells us that the church is unfinished without elders

    1. Titus 1:5 (NIV) The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.

    2. Acts 14:23 (NIV) Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.

  10. Because the bible describes the three groups of people who make up the local church. This describes God’s understanding of church. If you don’t have them, you’re not in church.

    1. Philippians 1:1 (NIV) Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons

  11. Because the church is the only place of godly discipline

    1. Matthew 18:15-17 (NIV) “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. [16] But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that `every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ [17] If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

  12. Because the church is the only place you mix with people different to yourself

    1. Acts 2:5,9-11 (NIV) Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven……… [9] Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, [10] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome [11] (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

  13. Because the church comprises “great numbers of people”

    1. Acts 11:25-26 (NIV) Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, [26] and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

  14. Because the church is made up of shepherds and flocks of sheep

    1. Acts 20:28-30 (NIV) Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

  15. Because you cannot protect yourself from attack on your own.

    1. Acts 20:28-30 (NIV) Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. [29] I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. [30] Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.

  16. Because it is through the unity of the church that the evil realm is overpowered

    1. Ephesians 3:10-11 (NIV) His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, [11] according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  17. Because healing takes place in the context of submission to church eldership

    1. James 5:14-15 (NIV) Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. [15] And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

  18. Because God sees local churches not individuals

    1. Revelation 1:11 (NIV) “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

  19. Because you cannot stand against the devil’s powerful spiritual forces on your own.

    1. Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

  20. Because Jesus prayed that the church would be one gathering of people not many individuals doing their own thing.

    1. John 17:20-21 (NIV) “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, [21] that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.

  21. Because the gathered church is a witness to the world that Jesus is worth believing in.

    1. John 17:20,23 (NIV) “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, [23] I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

  22. Because God’s glory is given to the gathered church

    1. John 17:22 (NIV) I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one

It is very clear from these few scriptures (and there are many more), that there Jesus died so we would live life together.
